Khoya kheerer peda/ Sweets made of thickened milk

Khoya is a thickened milk product that is often used in various South Asian recipes. In Kolkata, Khoya can easily be obtained from local sweet shops. Homemade peda made from khoya will impress whoever you serve them to; without making you toil a lot.

Ingredients –

  • Khoya (I buy it from neighbouring sweet shops)
  • Sugar
  • Elaichi / Cardamom
  • Silver coating — for garnishing (optional — I often leave it out)
  • Silvered or coarsely ground nuts of your choice like almonds or pistachio — for garnishing (optional)

Preparation –

  • Grate khoya a steel grater
  • Now add powdered sugar to this
  • Put this on a heavy bottomed pan and on high flame. Remember to stir continuously
  • After the first 10 minutes on high flame, put this on low flame and keep stirring
  • After the concoction has thickened, sprinkle some cardamom powder on it and put it off the burner
  • Once it cools down, use your hands to make small flattened balls (These make the pedas)
  • Put the silver foil on each
  • Sprinkle some silvered or coarsely ground nuts
