Chuno Maachh er Chorchori/ Indian Carplet Stir Fried with Potatoes and Brinjal

 

Chuno Maachh or the Indian Carplet is a very small fish that is quiet famous among the fish lovers. It is quite tasty by itself if you simply fry and have it, but it is equally tasty when used in curries, stir fries and broths. Here is one such recipe that uses the fish in a Chorchori. Chorchori is basically a tasty medley of vegetables and other ingredients. It is a traditional dish of Bengal and is best served with steamed rice. It is tasty and healthy at the same time, a rare combination. If your family and friends love fish then here is your chance to impress your family with this delicious dish, and feed them some vegetables too alongside.

 

Ingredients:

  • Chuno maachh
  • Potatoes
  • Eggplant
  • Onion
  • Cumin (whole)
  • turmeric powder
  • Chilli powder
  • Cumin powder
  • Salt
  • Chopped Cilantro (optional)

Preparation:

  1. Clean the fishes and rub the fish with salt and turmeric
  2. Fry the fish properly and keep aside
  3. Finely chop the potatoes, eggplant and onions
  4. Heat oil (you may use the same oil that you used to fry the fish; but reduce the quantity) in a pan and temper with cumin seeds
  5. Add in the chopped onions and fry it well
  6. Now add the potatoes and when half done, add the eggplant too and fry well
  7. Next add turmeric, chilli and cumin powder and salt and keep frying in a medium heat till everything gets cooked well. (do not add water unless the vegetables are getting burnt. If required, sprinkle just a little bit of water)
  8. Now add the fried fishes and let it cook
  9. Take it off the flame when the fish gets cooked and serve with steamed rice. You may add chopped cilantro if you wish.

Tip: you could also use Punti maachh or mourala maachh to make this recipe.
