Lotey Maachh er Jhuro/ Spicy Scrambled Bombay Duck Fish

The Lotey mach or Bombay Duck are small pink fish that acquired the name Bombay Duck as it was transported via the Bombay line trains, more specifically by the Bombay mail train also known as Bombay Daak, so the name transformed into Bombay Duck. This recipe is quintessentially a Bangladeshi recipe/Bangal ranna. For all the fish lovers this a perfect recipe to gorge on with plain steamed rice.

Ingredients:

  • Lotey/ Bombay Duck Fish
  • Oil
  • Chopped Onions
  • Chopped tomato
  • Green Chilies (optional)
  • Chopped Coriander leaves

Marinade Ingredients:

  • Mustard Oil
  • Salt
  • Ginger paste
  • Garlic Paste
  • Turmeric powder
  • Dried Chilli powder
  • Cumin powder
  • Garam masala

Method of Preparation:

  1. Wash the fish properly and marinate the fish with the ingredients listed under ‘Marinade’. Set it aside for some time.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and fry chopped onions, chopped tomato and fry for some time.
  3. Add the marinated fish pieces and continue to stir till the fish is cooked thoroughly. Don’t worry if the fish breaks a little — the consistency would be like a scramble finally anyway. You will know that the fish is cooked when the fish lets out water. Add some green chilies if you want.
  4. Add chopped coriander leaves and continue to cook by stirring occasionally.
  5. Turn off the heat and let it stand for some time.
  6. Serve with hot steamed rice.
