Mouri bata diye koi maachh /climbing perch with fennel seed paste

Koi maach is a delicious fish that tastes yummy in this somewhat thick and oily broth based recipe. The unique licorice flavour of fennel makes the gravy aromatic and oh-so-tempting!

Ingredients:

Climbing perch (koi maachh)
Turmeric
Salt
Chilli powder
Potato
Fennel seeds
Cumin seeds
Ginger
Green chillies
Mustard oil
Garam masala paste
Tomato puree/chopped tomatoes

Method:

Smear the fish with turmeric, salt and chili powder and fry both sides till golden brown.
Keep aside.
Chop potatoes into chunks.
Smear with turmeric and salt and fry and keep aside.
Make a paste of fennel, cumin, ginger and green chilies.
Heat mustard oil.
Temper with fennel and cumin seeds.
Now add the paste and turmeric and salt along with it.
Cook till oil separates.
Add tomato puree/ chopped tomatoes and cook for a while.
Add warm water, bring to boil.
Add the fish.
After cooking for a while, add potatoes.
Boil till fish and potatoes are done.
Add garam masala paste (cinnamon, carmamom and cloves).
Let the curry soak the flavor for a while.
Turn off heat.
Add ghee.
Mix well and give some standing time.
Remove from heat and serve with rice.
