Banana Malpoua By Adwitiya Das

 

Most Bengalis have had homemade malpoua, at least once in their life. I am no different! As I grew up, I started experimented and this is my version of the traditional malpoua. Some simple ingredients added to the traditional recipe will definitely enhance the flavours. So, here is my twist on the malpoua! It has earned me rave reviews, and will do the same for you. Even if you are not having guests over, you can create this delectable sweet dish for your family and satisfy their sweet tooth. So, it is a win –win situation for all!

  • Ingredients:

 

  • For Malpoua Batter:

 

  • Maida – around 250 gms
  • Kanthali Kola/small ripe yellow skinned banana – around 5 pieces
  • Sugar – around 1 ½ tablespoons
  • Salt – just a pinch
  • Peppercorns – 2 to 4
  • Finely sliced Coconut (a little old one) pieces
  • Cashew Nuts, split in half
  • Cardamom powder
  • Water, as needed

 

  • For Sugar Syrup

 

  • Sugar
  • Water

 

  • Method:

 

  1. Mix together maida, banana, sugar and a little salt. Mix well with a little, to form a thick batter, so that no lumps are left.

 

  1. Next, sliced coconut pieces, cashew nuts, peppercorns along with cardamom powder and mix well.

 

  1. Heat enough oil to a pan for deep frying the thick batter.

 

  1. Drop a ladle full of the mixture and fry it till reddish brown.

 

  1. In a pan, add the sugar and water to form sugar syrup of thin consistency, by boiling over a medium flame.

 

  1. Place the fried malpouas in a bowl and spread a little bit of the sugar syrup. Serve hot, you could add a side of ice cream.

 

Note: You could add honey instead of the sugar syrup.
