Alu Phoolkopi diye Koi Maachh/Climbing perch with potatoes and cauliflower

Not all round the year one gets proper sized koi maachh in the market. But the lust for this tasty fish can hardly be resisted during other times either. While the more exotic recipes revolving around Koi are reserved for larger sized fish, the smaller variety that more frequently floods the market can be used for steaming and cooking with vegetables like gourd and cauliflower. This recipe takes up the version with potatoes and cauliflower.

Ingredients:

  • Koi/Climbing perch
  • Cauliflower
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Cumin seeds
  • Turmeric powder
  • Chilli powder
  • Cumin powder
  • Coriander powder
  • Garam masala powder
  • Salt
  • Oil

Preparation:

  • Put little vertical slits in the fish on both sides and smear with turmeric and salt
  • Fry the fish and keep aside
  • Dice the potatoes and cauliflower in medium-sized pieces
  • Fry the cauliflower in low heat till browned and keep aside
  • Temper the oil with cumin seeds and add the potatoes
  • Fry till browned
  • Mix turmeric, chilli, cumin and coriander powders in a little water and add to the pan
  • Add tomatoes when masala is cooked
  • Add salt and sugar and some more water and cook
  • When the liquid boils, add fish and fried cauliflower florets.
  • This fish needs to be cooked for a while
  • Add garam masala powder when everything is fully cooked and turn the flame off.
  • You may add finely chopped cilantro and green chillies for garnishing.
