Shahi Tukra

From the land of sweets and spices, India, here is another great dessert that has royalty embedded in its name “Shahi”. Shahi literally means royal, so the name suggests it is fit for royal people. Tukda means piece, so an authentic Shahi Tukda is sure to make you feel royal (shahi). Who thought that something as humble as bread could be turned into something that was so delicious? Shahi Tukda has completely changed that notion. This dessert is rich in both taste as well as aroma. So if you are not afraid to add a few more calories, then this is a must try for you.

 

Ingredients:

  • Bread slices: 6

  • Sugar: 1/2 cup or as per taste

  • Fresh milk: 1 litre

  • Milk powder: 1/4 cup

  • Cardamoms: 2/3

  • Ghee : 1cup

  • Almond: 1/2 cup (grounded)

  • cashews  :soaked in water; whole or halved

 

Preparation:

  • Keep milk to boil

  • Add cardamoms and keep stirring

  • Cut each bread slice in to 4 equal parts. If small slices are being used, discard the sides only and use as a whole the rest of it

  • As you slowly boil the milk, stirring occasionally, alongside, in a non-stick pan, heat some ghee in slow heat and fry bread slices till golden brown on all sides

  • Drain and Keep aside.

  • When milk starts boiling, add milk powder and stir well. (You may also use condensed milk instead of powder)

  • Add cashews while the milk is nearly done.
  • Add sugar and keep stirring until it become thick

  • Turn off flame.

  • In a serving dish arrange slices side by side and pour the thickened milk over it

  • Garnish with grounded almonds or chopped ghee roasted cashew

  • Chill before serving or serve at room temperature.
