Bread Pakora

This is an extremely popular Indian snack. It is easy to make and great to eat. When I was a student in Pune, this I found to being sold at almost every nook and corner. Those were not the days when we counted calories or shrank from deep fried items – anything filling and easy on pocket was our cup of tea; and bread pakora was one such item.

Ingredients:

(Make 12 or 8 pieces according to the size of bread)
4 firm white bread
1 cup gram flour (besan)
1 tablespoon rice flour
1 teaspoon salt
Pinch of asafoetida (hing)
1 teaspoon caraway seeds (ajwain)
2 finely chopped green chilly
1/4 cup chopped cilantro (green coriander leaves)
3/4 cup water
Oil to deep fry
Preparation –

  1. Take bread pieces and cut them into squares (you may not cute either, but that would make the pakoras huge).
  2. Take all the above mentioned ingredients apart from the bread and make them into a smooth batter
    3. Take a frying pan and heat oil (enough for deep frying) in it
    4. Now dip the bread pieces in the batter and fry them in oil
    5. Fry the pieces till brown on both sides and serve them immediately with tomato or chilli sauce.

Note: Adding ajwain (caraway seeds) to a batter that shall be used for deep frying, helps to keep acidity at bay.
