Rui/ Katla Macher chop / Chops made of Indian Carp

Fish recipes are a favourite especially among Bengalis. Rui or Katla are similar types of fish and a popular fish that is incorporated in many Bengali fish recipes. One of the most popular being Macher chop or Fish Chop. Fish chops can be made with any variety of white fish – bhetki, basa, halibut etc. Fish chops make for great snacking idea. The chops can also be a part of dinner and lunch, if served as a starter. This is also a fish recipe that is without fishbones making it ideal for people who avoid tasting fish items for the fear of bones.

Ingredients

  • Rohu/ Indian Carp/ Bhekti
  • Salt
  • Turmeric powder
  • Potatoes
  • Oil
  • Onion
  • Garlic paste
  • Ginger paste
  • Cumin- coriander – chilli-turmeric powder
  • Eggs
  • Cornflour
  • Bread crumbs

Preparation

  • You can take Rohu/ Indian Carp/ Halibut/ Bhekti
  • Fillets of the same would be great – this would save you the trouble of deboning. Else you can take any cut.
  • Boil them well with salt & turmeric
  • Remove the bones and make a paste
  • Boil potatoes and peel them
  • Mix the boiled fish and potatoes together
  • Heat oil in a pan and sauté chopped onions till brown
  • Add the ginger garlic paste and the cumin- coriander- turmeric –chili powder
  • Stir well
  • Now add the garam masala powder and add the fish & potato mixture to this
  • Keep stirring and mixing well
  • Once dry, add some cornflour & an egg to this mixture for binding
  • Mix in well
  • When this concoction cools a little, shape it in whichever shape you like
  • Whisk an egg with a pinch of salt and keep aside
  • Dip the raw chops in this whisked egg batter and then cover them with breadcrumbs
  • Deep fry and serve with salad & sauce

Variation –

  • You can mix the fish chop stuffing with coriander leaves and a dash of lime juice/ amchur (dried mango powder) and make round shapes of the same
  • Now heat oil in a shallow pan and fry these as kebabs
  • You can also keep this filling in a microwaveable container & grate cheese on top & bake them, then cut them in cubes and serve as fish cake
