Basmati Chaal Diye Moong Daal er Khichuri/ Basmati Rice and Moong Dal Khichuri

Khichuri is traditionally prepared with Gobindobhog rice. Gobindobhog has a distinct flavour and smell all of its own. However Basmati, which is mostly favored for making fried rices etc can also be used and it too has an aroma uniquely it’s own. Try this Khichuri with Basmati rice and let me know how you liked it –

Ingredients –

  • Basmati Rice
  • Moong Dal ( the rice and dal should be exactly and of equal quantity)
  • Oil
  • Bay leaves
  • Whole Garam Masala
  • Green chilies
  • Ginger paste
  • Cumin powder/ jire guro
  • salt to taste
  • Ghee
  • Peas whole
  • Hing/Asafoetida
  • Potato

Preparation –

  • Dry fry the Moong dal and keep aside
  • Wash the rice well
  • Heat oil in a deep bottomed pan and temper with bay leaves and whole garam masala
  • Add a pinch of Hing
  • Fry the halved potatoes well
  • If you wish, you can add other vegetables as well
  • Add green chilies and add Ginger paste
  • Stir well and add Garam masala, Turmeric and Cumin powder
  • Add the rice and dal and stir well
  • Add water and Add the peas
  • Once done, add a dash of ghee( optional)

Note – Since my family enjoys it, I boiled eggs, smeared with turmeric and salt, shallow fried till all sides turned golden, and then put it in the khichuri before serving
